Whale watching from Mirissa, honestly
Boats leave before dawn and the search can take two or three hours. Sightings are good in season but they are not guaranteed, and any operator promising otherwise is telling you something they cannot know.
The sea beyond the headland is rougher than it looks from the beach. If you are prone to seasickness, take something the night before rather than on the morning, and stay on deck where you can see the horizon.
Choose an operator that keeps its distance and cuts its engines rather than chasing. A boat that crowds a whale gets you a closer photograph and a worse morning, and the crowding is the reason the animals move further out each season.
